Fifth U.S. Army Band

History of "Chicago's Own" Fifth U.S. Army Band

The Fifth US Army Band has a proud and exceptional history.   Stationed North of Chicago at Fort Sheridan starting in 1949, the Fifth Army Band was known for their top notch musicians and high caliber performances.  Leading parades, dignified ceremonies, and special events, the musicians kept a very demanding schedule, traveling tens of thousands of miles a year to represent the Army at hundreds of events.

Affectionately known as "Chicago's Own" during the Fort Sheridan years, the band had their own weekly radio program on WGN for decades, featuring many different ensembles and groups.  In the early 1970's the band was moved with the Fifth Army to San Antonio, Texas.   In Texas, the Fifth Army band continued to hold up its reputation for excellence well into the 90's.  For more information, please see the following article by music historian, Jack Kopstein:  The Fifth United States Army Band.
